Urine Samples
The guidelines have recently changed. Please DO NOT bring in a urine sample unless requested by a doctor or a nurse. If you think a urine sample may be needed, come to your appointment in time to do a sample at the surgery if requested (and don't go to the toilet just before leaving your house).
Urine samples may be needed for a suspected infection in children, men, people over 65 years old and for people with catheters. Urine samples are also needed for monitoring of different diseases but that requires a different process from urine samples for infection. A lot of nurse's time is spent dealing with unnecessary samples and often they are not collected in the correct way so they have to be repeated.
The key message is please DO NOT bring in a urine sample unless asked to do so.
